CarPlay issues with 2022 Rav 4 Hybrid

I too am having issues with CarPlay connectivity ever since updating to IOS 16.5. Worked fine the day before updating and now can’t use any steering wheel buttons to control and sometimes just won’t connect at all. Very frustrating. This is NOT a Toyota issue, this is clearly from the Apple update! Please fix!

This is what I did to Fix my disconnect problem. Has worked for a few days no issues.

It will cost about $60-80usd. Returnable through amazon.

Buy a bluetooth wireless CarPlay transmitter.

I know it sounds stupid to think it will work, because the transmitter still plugs into the USBa on the console. But it worked for my wired CarPlay on my 2022 Toyota Rav4, transmitted to my iPhone 12 running 16.6.

Now I have wireless Apple CarPlay, which works with my bluetooth and connects when I start the car.

Anyone who has read the entire thread knows that I tried everything including an entire system restore on the phone.

I spent a day on the phone with Toyota resetting the multi media.

I had about 3 calls on the phone with apple sending them logs and system failure records etc.

my phone works in other cars, and other phones work in my car. this was the only way to get my phone to work in my car.

They said they know about the problem, and there's nothing they can do until new software hopefully addresses it.

That's it for me. If it eventually fails I'll post back, otherwise, this is how I fixed my CarPlay issues.

I just got off the phone with apple. I’ve been following this discussion board for a couple months now. So I finally decided to contact apple and see if they had any more info. Apparently all iPhone 15 users are having the same issues. It’s listed as a top high priority. In the meantime he said to try this, disconnect CarPlay from car and erase phone from car. Then change the name of your iPhone and reconnect it all. He also mentioned to go under screen time and turn off or make sure the car play option is off. I guess at this point it’s worth a shot to try his recommendations. Trying to avoid buying the wireless adapter. However, I may end up caving and buying it. To the ones who have bought the wireless adapter, which one did you purchase?

Happy to report that I purchased this dongle for $74.89 and this mostly resolved the issue. There are occasional glitches where I have to reboot the audio system by hard pressing and holding the power button, but works 90% of the time. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BBG4QRPX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I do t think they see this page. Talked to 4 techs. 2 being seniors. They didn’t know and had to run the whole list of things to do that didn’t work. What I did was ask dealership I bought my car at.

Had tried everything. Went to car dealership and he reset/collaboration in my car setting. That took care of it. I still seem to not get my maps to show but I was driving when trying so ya that don’t work. I bought a new cord from T noble A port to C. It works now. I’m going to try my cord that came with phone but I need adapter(I bought those trying everything) and I have that. I could have done it myself actually. No special touches. Took less than 15 min to get car to start collaboration to end collaborating. First the guy thought I needed a Blekin wire bc that’s what worked for him. He had 3 weeks of frustration and that cord helped him. It was tried in my car and didn’t work. I have 2019civic. Settings > reset car (however you need to get there

Fellow Carplay Sufferers,

I found a possible workaround. I've been able to complete two 30-minute drives without a Carplay crash.

If you wait until you have put your vehicle into drive and are moving before you connect your phone, that seems to be the trick. I don't know if it's (1) the fact that the vehicle is in drive, (2) the fact that the vehicle is moving, (3) or the fact that it's simply been a few minutes since the car has been turned on. I suspect it's number 3 and the car just needs time to get through its startup routine.

The above has been working for me. I hope it helps others. Also, last weekend I wiped my phone and set it back up from scratch. That didn't fix the Carplay issue but it did fix another 16.5 issue I was having where my phone was warm all day long and the battery was drastically worse than before 16.5.

I had to go to a new employer for some paperwork today. So I very much needed reliable GPS.

This is what I did. For the trip to the destination from my house it worked without any issue at all. On the way back, the Carplay disconnected once, but then stayed connected after unplugging the device and plugging it back in.

  • I started my vehicle, leaving it in park.
  • Allowed the head unit to boot up to the main menu screen.
  • Unlocked my device (put in the destination info and accepted the trip it gave me, but if you aren't neccesarily using anything GPS related this step isn't really needed).
  • Plugged in my device with it still unlocked (with the screen still lit up and on the wallpaper/or map if using GPS).
  • Carplay connected and was able to be used as normal.

**Again though, I tried this same method on my return trip to get home and it did disconnect a single time, but after unplugging and replugging back in it stayed connected for the return trip home. So I don't necessarily think this is a fix, but maybe the bug is having to do with Carplay not being fully able to bypass the lock screen, efficiently with being interrupted, and therefore disconnecting. **

Just wanted to pass this along as we all continue to put Bandaids on this issue that needs an actual fix from Apple, who seems to be in no way in a hurry to do so as we enter month 3 of this going on.

Hi, Thanks for the update. I noticed the same thing with my car. If I wait for the dash to start then unlock my phone, and use an apple cable, I can "usually" get a full drive without a reset. But I'll still lose ability to use volume on the radio most times.

Since the update, Toyota is definitely having a communication issue with the iPhone.

I have Birdseye camera "Auto" activated on my screen and I notice that a lot of the dash resets are when I slow for a light. I have been trying to figure out which combination might work the best.

-In Rav4 forums, I notice that a dash reset by removing my Personal Account in the Toyota system could clear the issue.

some people also recommend disconnecting the 12v battery for a reset, but I'm going to try removing my account first to see if that helps.

I am having the same issues on my 2022 RAV4 Hybrid XSE. Carplay disconnects every 60 seconds or so, and then I lose volume control ability on my steering wheel and on the main radio unit. I have to reboot my phone and the vehicle's radio to connect again with working controls, only to have it disconnect again. This is very distracting and unsafe while driving. I work at a Toyota dealership and Toyota corporate confirmed it is not a Toyota issue. We've have our technicians perform multiple tests and updates with no change. We are getting calls from Apple users the past few weeks stating they are seeing the same issues after doing the iOS 16.5 update on their iPhone. All users including myself did not have these issues until doing the iOS 16.5 update.

Apple- when can we expect an update to fix these issues?? Not only is this not practical and user friendly, but highly unsafe while driving. Many drivers rely on Carplay for everyday driving and commutes, this tool is useless if it does not perform properly, especially while traveling and needing navigation assistance.

We know it’s an apple problem because we can pinpoint the exact update from Apple that broke it, iOS 16.5. If you use an iPhone on a prior version, it will work flawlessly. I am an IT professional and we tested about a dozen phones in two different RAV4s. In every case, iOS 16.5 and higher failed in the RAV.

To be totally fair to Apple, perhaps Toyota cut some corners in their CarPlay implementation, so when Apple pushed new code for CarPlay, they found an issue with the Toyota Carplay implementation, but that seems like a stretch. I am sure a car company as big as Toyota had to demonstrate the way they will implement CarPlay to Apple in order to get it approved. I mean, I am not sure, I just assume they’d have to!? Who knows…
