CarPlay issues with 2022 Rav 4 Hybrid

I too am having issues with CarPlay connectivity ever since updating to IOS 16.5. Worked fine the day before updating and now can’t use any steering wheel buttons to control and sometimes just won’t connect at all. Very frustrating. This is NOT a Toyota issue, this is clearly from the Apple update! Please fix!

This is what I did to Fix my disconnect problem. Has worked for a few days no issues.

It will cost about $60-80usd. Returnable through amazon.

Buy a bluetooth wireless CarPlay transmitter.

I know it sounds stupid to think it will work, because the transmitter still plugs into the USBa on the console. But it worked for my wired CarPlay on my 2022 Toyota Rav4, transmitted to my iPhone 12 running 16.6.

Now I have wireless Apple CarPlay, which works with my bluetooth and connects when I start the car.

Anyone who has read the entire thread knows that I tried everything including an entire system restore on the phone.

I spent a day on the phone with Toyota resetting the multi media.

I had about 3 calls on the phone with apple sending them logs and system failure records etc.

my phone works in other cars, and other phones work in my car. this was the only way to get my phone to work in my car.

They said they know about the problem, and there's nothing they can do until new software hopefully addresses it.

That's it for me. If it eventually fails I'll post back, otherwise, this is how I fixed my CarPlay issues.

Thank you for helping us fight the good fight! I spoke to Toyota yesterday, saying that “I was surprised” that they had been saying there was no known issue, given Apple Communities and Reddit have discussed it so extensively…… and he acknowledged that 2021 models onward didn’t have issue bc they had a completely different audio system and it’s wireless. He confirmed we can’t retrofit a different system bc the 2020 not only has a different size hole, but also doesn’t have the right wiring to accomodate it.

HOWEVER, he has a call scheduled with Australia’s technical officer today to discuss it (as this Toyota bloke has probably had me speak to him > 12 times since 2020 about it) and escalate, because I pulled out the words “consumer law” and “not fit for purpose”

On principle, I hadn’t wanted to buy anything until now. I’ve just given up - it’s too dangerous for me to keep restarting my car at the lights 3-4 times a trip.

(FYI everyone, in case you didn’t know, that’s the only fix that works for me - make sure you count to 10 before turning engine back on, or you’ll have to repeat).

I got this one, arriving tonight. I’ll let know how it goes.

Having the same issues with my 2020 RAV4 XSE Hybrid. Carplay disconnects and reconnects about once per minute. I also sometimes lose the ability to use my steering wheel controls. The car's audio system firmware is updated to the latest version, I've switched cables, I've rebooted my phone, etc. This situation is INCREDIBLY distracting while driving. Everything started the morning I woke up and my phone informed me it installed 16.5 overnight. Definitely an iOS 16.5 issue.

16.5.1 did not help in my '23 Rav4; Constant disconnects, Volume issues, The Map starts a home destination.

-I have tried apple cables, forget this car, and turned off screen time restrictions. Bluetooth works fine.

This is not a Toyota problem. My daughter's phone now glitches after update on her Mazda, My nieces phone no longer works in her car, and so on.

The update has made CarPlay non functional.

Apple are you listening?

Hi, I updated to 16.5.1 (a).

I also;

-went to Face ID & Passcode and turned on Allow Access When Locked > Accessories.

-turned off equalizer.

I tested with new update, and it initially didn't recognize CarPlay, then did when I plugged it in again.

I don't know if it will continually disconnect.

But initial start up said "USB not connected" on Rav4 display.

2022 Rav4 Hybrid. Same issue for me. Carplay crashes every 90 seconds or less with iOS 16.5 and disables volume controls. Didn’t happen prior to updating to iOS 16.5. Does not happen with my wife’s phone using the same cable and car, but she’s on iOS14. Does not happen with my phone using the same cable in a Ford F150. So it’s an incompatibility with iOS 16.5 with Rav4’s it seems… Please fix!!

I am having the same issues on my 2022 RAV4 Hybrid XSE. Carplay disconnects every 60 seconds or so, and then I lose volume control ability on my steering wheel and on the main radio unit. I have to reboot my phone and the vehicle's radio to connect again with working controls, only to have it disconnect again. This is very distracting and unsafe while driving. I work at a Toyota dealership and Toyota corporate confirmed it is not a Toyota issue. We've have our technicians perform multiple tests and updates with no change. We are getting calls from Apple users the past few weeks stating they are seeing the same issues after doing the iOS 16.5 update on their iPhone. All users including myself did not have these issues until doing the iOS 16.5 update.

Apple- when can we expect an update to fix these issues?? Not only is this not practical and user friendly, but highly unsafe while driving. Many drivers rely on Carplay for everyday driving and commutes, this tool is useless if it does not perform properly, especially while traveling and needing navigation assistance.

Just putting an update in this thread that there is an iOS update (16.6) available. There is the usual "security updates" verbiage, but at least this one also has "bug fixes". Tried researching further but came up empty with any specifics as to what "bugs" were being fixed. Maybe our issue is in there somewhere. Would be great of Apple to stop ignoring this.

Rav 2020 hybrid, the car play works for iphone 11 and not for anything iphone 12 or above. Intermittently will work for skip/reverse from steering, volume always works for iphone 12 & 14, but mostly not working. Interestingly the phone will work with no issues in my mothers 2021 Yaris. I wonder if the model of the phone has anything to do with it, the iphone 12 came out 3 months after the car was manufactured and nearly 5 months before my mum's Yaris. Perhaps it is a firmware and not iOS problem as my daughter and son both have iPhone 11 and the same iOS as me, but their phones work with no issue and everytime I complain to Toyota they can't replicate the issue, leading me to conclude perhaps their phones are not 12 or above?

I called Brand Marketing a couple of weeks back. They said they haven't heard anything and suggested I go to the dealership. This happens every year about this time of year before a big IOS update (17). It makes your phone useless in your car. With newly passed laws, you will get a ticket for using your phone manually in hand. Right now you can't dependably make or receive phone calls or texts, use GPS listen to music from you phone....... It even locks up the radio and radio display from time to time. It is really annoying that you can't simply connect your phone to your car. It does charge it, but that is all.
