CarPlay issues with 2022 Rav 4 Hybrid

I too am having issues with CarPlay connectivity ever since updating to IOS 16.5. Worked fine the day before updating and now can’t use any steering wheel buttons to control and sometimes just won’t connect at all. Very frustrating. This is NOT a Toyota issue, this is clearly from the Apple update! Please fix!

This is what I did to Fix my disconnect problem. Has worked for a few days no issues.

It will cost about $60-80usd. Returnable through amazon.

Buy a bluetooth wireless CarPlay transmitter.

I know it sounds stupid to think it will work, because the transmitter still plugs into the USBa on the console. But it worked for my wired CarPlay on my 2022 Toyota Rav4, transmitted to my iPhone 12 running 16.6.

Now I have wireless Apple CarPlay, which works with my bluetooth and connects when I start the car.

Anyone who has read the entire thread knows that I tried everything including an entire system restore on the phone.

I spent a day on the phone with Toyota resetting the multi media.

I had about 3 calls on the phone with apple sending them logs and system failure records etc.

my phone works in other cars, and other phones work in my car. this was the only way to get my phone to work in my car.

They said they know about the problem, and there's nothing they can do until new software hopefully addresses it.

That's it for me. If it eventually fails I'll post back, otherwise, this is how I fixed my CarPlay issues.

I just took my 2020 Toyota Rav 4 Hybrid limited into Toyota shop in April and today...same issue and it stopped 5 times on the 10 minute drive home. Toyota updated software in April on my car. They were great..they actually had a 2022 toyota Rav 4 Hybrid in the shop in our small town with the same issue..intermittent to no connectivity of iphone (13 is mine) with my center screen. The screen goes black or the volume and off and on button on console does not work. I tried different USB cables, as Toyota did too. No luck. It is really frustrating as I use my GPS for directions often. I paid two bills to toyota on this issue and it is not there issue to solve. How do we tell Apple iphone to fix this bug?? Feeling helpless with this.

Hi, I feel bad that you have this issue as well, so I’ll post again. The issue is fixed with a Bluetooth transmitter bought from Amazon. Or you can wait until ios17 comes out. If you read through the thread you’ll find the answers to most questions concerning this. I have no idea why Apple doesn’t pin the answer to the original post.

Good luck.

I mean, to be clear, there are plenty of wireless carplay adapters available on the market which will solve the problem for you until Apple does finally solve it. They can even be purchased through other retailers. Ignore the amazon part if you like, and you can still get Carplay right now in your RAV4, if you'd like. We all agree it shouldn't be broken, but that won't make it better in the meantime. I still am loving my wireless carplay. To the person posting above who says it's not broken in the Tacoma, it's definitely an iPhone issue and it's definitely limited to the RAV4, not all Toyotas, sadly.

2022 Rav4 - Coming here to say that I've reset my phone, reset the car multimedia system, erased my phone, tried different cables, and most recently went to apple to have them replace the hardware to see if that helps. Still nothing. I agree with what everyone is saying about it being unsafe and I hate that I paid money for a newer car feature and can't when use it.

I currently own a 2020 Rav4, and my phone is doing the same thing. My steering wheel works on Bluetooth and regular radio, but apple car play is not working. I can plug my phone in and it pops up on the screen, but my steering wheel skip buttons do not work what so ever. I can tap the screen to skip the button, but I liked the feature of not having to look away from the road in order to change a song. this stopped working around when IOS 16 came out. Toyota has checked my car and found nothing wrong with it mechanically and electronically

We all agree it should work. I should say, Bluetooth would never have the bandwidth to negotiate carplay. Bluetooth is often used to initiate wireless carplay but then hands off to Wi-Fi for higher bandwidth. So, to the comment above, it's not that Toyota didn't do a good job with Bluetooth, it's that they haven't revised the Infotainment system to include a Wi-Fi chip for wireless Carplay. (It may also be true that the Bluetooth implementation is bad, but I have no evidence for that and am too lazy to google it to see what version of Bluetooth they are using.) You can see an example of this bluetooth to wi-fi handoff when you get a dongle like jj above and I have gotten for Wireless carplay. It uses Bluetooth to begin the handoff, then sends data to the dongle via Wi-Fi from then on.

Exactly.

My friend has the '22 Lexus NX, which is the sister car to the Rav4.

Her car has the updated full dash screen and came with wireless apple CarPlay.

Her car worked after the iPhone update because they updated the Lexus multimedia system last year.

I went with Toyota from Lexus because I wanted a hybrid.

But it's definitely time for Toyota to follow suit and upgrade to a dash intergraded CarPlay wireless multimedia system.
