Hi there!
To begin, take a look at If the pointer doesn’t move when using the trackpad with Mac - Apple Support.
Also, if you have an Intel Mac, reset the SMC and NVRAM.
If the issue continues, start up your Mac in safe mode and test. Safe mode can help you to determine whether an issue is caused by software that loads as your Mac starts up.
If safe mode doesn't help, your Mac might need service. You can get started here: Mac Repair & Service - Apple Support.
If you have any questions, please let us know!

It's possible that the booting into safemode could be considered equivalent (in a basic way) as and SMC or NVRAM reset.
Also, Have you tried adjusting the trackpad settings? Checking Tracking Speed, Click sensitivity, and Force Click settings. Try changing the settings to see if it improves when and where on the trackpad it will respond to taps.

Thanks for the info. I have a MacBook Pro (2020) with an M1 chip. If you reading everything properly I reset the SMC but reset NVRAM is required for my device. While reset for SMC helped for awhile, it goes back to acting weird after a lot of use. I also will use an actual wireless mouse but have the same problem after extended use. I use my MacBook Pro to digitize images for embroidery designs, some which will take several hours to complete. Additionally, I always had difficulty using the touch pad for minor things like right clicking. It very frustrating to me.
FYI and Technically ALL Apple M1 / M2 Silicon computers DO NOT have a System Management Controller (SMC ) on this devices
What has been reported as an Equal to an SMC Rest on Apple Silicon Computers it to shutdown the computer, disconnect from Charger and then pause maybe 10 seconds.
The restart to computer
So we are not quit sure what exactly the user thinks they have performed but SMC Reset - not that is for sure
Thought I’d let everyone who tried to help know what finally happened. Made appointment with with Apple Store and it was sent off for repair. They replaced the touchpad, keyboard & M1 logic chip. So I wasn’t just to particular. Many thanks to everyone.
Does it react the same in all applications, or just a few? Does the cursor move smoothly or does it appear to jerk around when this happens?
Do you use any other input devices that use special software to make them work, like Logitech or Wacom ?

Thanks for all the suggestions but I ran into more problems. Before putting the problem out here I did try adjusting the setting on my touch pad, but that didn't help. Additionally, I contacted Embrilliance forum to see if any other users where experiencing this problem. No one stated that they had such an issue. Based on the suggestion I tried but I could not get my MacBook to boot up into Safe Mode, it would look like it was going to but the wording Safe Mode never appeared, so I really wasn't sure if it was or was not in Safe Mode. Once I gave up on that I rebooted my MacBook and the screens were changed. The fonts & icons were extremely small and the contrast was very dark. I went into setting thinking to the setting had gotten mess up with my attempts to get into safe mode. I somewhat got it back to my liking but it's still a little off for my taste. Additionally, now when I type the cursor will randomly jump to a different line or wipe out what i've just written. Also I can't highlight an area to do a copy/paste function. I think I'm going to have to contact support or take it into an Apple store.
