if you still have an issue, what brand external drive, all the same(?) Try something different.

I would not use encryption. I would also disable file vault on your hard drive while you backup your data under the security settings.

if neither works, it may be your flash drive does not have the capacity to backup your data.

Time Machine only backs up APFS drives under Ventura.

Time Machine has been backing up just fine for over a year on a Ventura Mac to a Time Capsule.

I erased the Time Capsule drive before setting up Time Machine on the Ventura Mac.

As you know, the Time Capsule can only be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) aka HFS+ when it is erased.

Try the following:

Format the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and set up Time Machine.

Time Machine will automatically (probably without telling you) format the drive APFS (Case sensitive), but you don't have to do anything to make this happen.

Personally, I would not trust a thumb drive .....if that is what you are using......with Time Machine, even if it seems to be working initially. I don't have one handy here to test to see if this is even possible.

So, the flash drive is now formatted in APFS (Case Sensitive), correct?

Is the flash drive formatted APFS? If not, then it won't backup. Time Machine only backs up APFS drives under Ventura.
