A friend has a MacBook Pro about 6 years old and running MacOS 13.3.1. She is unable to open files in Finder by clicking on the file using the mouse or the trackpad. If she goes to File>Open, the file will open but she can not open files by tapping or clicking on the file's icon.

To trouble shoot further you can:

Takes a bit longer to get to the login screen, does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, font cache, etc., third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled.
Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.
This test will tell you if third party interference; most* extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

Maybe it is obvious, and just a typing error, but you open documents in the Finder by double-clicking, not just clicking.
Does it happen with files that have non-ASCII characters, like accented characters àÓñ, and or other scripts like Japanese? There was an issue with some Unicode representations. That particular issue seems to have been resolved in 13.4, so it may be worth updating if she has not yet.

The current stable release of Ventura including bug fixes, security updates is macOS Ventura 13.4 —I would start there and see if the issue resolves itself

Yes, I do know it’s double clicking thats required. Sorry about that. She definitely has been trying to double click but she can’t click at all. Or at least, the icon doesn’t respond. She has to go to the menu and do file-open.

Thank you for that suggestion. I’ll pass it on to her, as she is trying to open files that may have accented letters. The files are in Portuguese.

I passed on your suggestion, however, she had/has already updated to 13.4 and the issue was not fixed. She will now seek her own resolution. Thank you for your efforts.
