All my files disappeared from my MacBook Pro's desktop

If by default iCloud Drive got turned on— look for your files there.

Finder>Go>Go to Folder> see iyour files are here, copy & paste:

~/iCloud Drive (Archive)

I would add that you should also have a backup of the computer and all external media (including the cloud) which contains important & unique data. There are a lot of new ways to permanently lose access to your data with these newer Macs due to all the new security features. macOS includes the Time Machine backup software for free....all you need to do is purchase an external drive to use for the backups.

If you have a backup, then you could retrieve the missing items from the backup.
