Downloads no longer in upper bar on iMac

Been using Apple for number of years now and still learning so please bear with me.

In the past any time I have downloaded something it has appeared in a small folder in the top bar at the very top of my iMac screen. However, now I have to go looking for it which is a bit of a pain in the derrière!

Pretty sure that I have done something silly by accident, can anyone help?

Thanks

iMac 27″, macOS 13.4

It is unclear what you mean by "a small folder in the top bar"... you mean the menu bar? Or the toolbar of a window?

By default, downloaded files go to your Downloads folder.

In the Finder, you can have your Downloads folder in the Sidebar of your windows, for easy access; you can open it immediately by pressing Command-Option-L; and it can also be accessed from the Dock - it is usually on the right, close to where the trash can is.

So many ways...

Maybe you can clarify exactly what you were used to doing, and it can be made to work, too.

FWIW, I reset the download location on all my Macs in all the browsers to the Desktop. Makes files really easy to find. 😎

That is provided that you then organize them; a lot of people already have hundreds of files on their desktop, and that does not make them easy to find 😎

It is similar to having all e-mail in the Inbox (yes, there are plenty of people who do that!)
