Disk random ejection

Monterey 2016 MBP started with the disk ejected error. Noticed when trying to back up since my last backup was in January, now June. Couldn’t get it to stay connected long enough for backup to complete. Erased the disk, even though dangerous as only backup, then backup with fresh drive. It ejected a few times then finally finished. Tried another USB 3 drive and having the same issue. I can’t even get it to stay connected long enough to erase the disk. Have tried SMC and safe boot with no success.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.6

Unless both drives have issues, then most likely you either have a hardware issue with the laptop or drive cable/adapter, or you have an issue with some third party software which is interfering with the normal operation of macOS.

Make sure to connect the drive directly to the laptop and disconnect all other external devices in case one of them is causing a problem.

To see if any third party software may be causing a problem, run EtreCheck and post the report here so we can review it.

What is the make & model of the two drives? How old are these two drives?

Edit: try connecting the drive to another USB-C port especially on the other side of the laptop. Best to try them all to be safe.
