Problems with ogg files?

Hello. I’m having problems with ogg files when trying to import in Audacity and/or WaveLab Cast on my MacBook (16” 2021; 13.3.1). Audacity just crashes when trying to import ogg files (I recall in the past, I didn't have that problem). When I open WaveLab Cast, I get a message window stating: “VST 2 plug-ins are not supported in Apple Native Mode. If you want to use VST 2 plug-ins, start WaveLab Cast in Rosetta 2 mode”. Not sure what that means. If I try to open an ogg file in WaveLab Cast, a window opens stating “The file cannot be opened. The format is unknown or WaveLab Cast could not find a suitable decoder on your system”.

Please can someone advise me how to fix this problem?

Thank you.

First try this, select the WaveLab Cast app, press Command+i, in the Info window that opens, see if it has a place to check to run in Rosetta. If it does, mark it then open WaveLab Cast and see if it will open the .ogg files.

FWIW, VLC should open .ogg files as well. https://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Handbrake can open .ogg files and convert them to a different audio format.

Q - " start WaveLab Cast in Rosetta 2 mode”. Not sure what that means."

A - To answer the Rosetta 2 aspect of your question Only.

If you need to install Rosetta on your Mac

Rosetta 2 is only available on Apple Computer with the Silicon M1 / M2 CPU.

Terminal Command

softwareupdate --install-rosetta

There are three categories / types of software that can run on the Operations System.

Only Intel Binary Code. This software will invoke Rosetta 2 to translate the Intel binaries so the operating system can understand and execute the Application. The Applications must be 64 Bit to function on Big Sur, Monterey and Ventura

Universal Binary Software.  It contains Both Intel and M1/ M2 ARMs binary code and refer to (  Universal 2 ) When the user installs a 64 bit Application that contains Both Intel and M1 / M2 ARMs binaries - depending on factors, the Operating System may or may not invoke Rosetta 2.

Apple Silicon “ Checking in System Information >> Applications  >> as of now, only see One Application classified as Apple Silicon and that is “ Rosetta 2 Updater “.

That would make perfect sense since. It is specifically designed to operate only on Apple Silicon M1 / M2 ARMs based computers

But are there any problems associated with this? Will Rosetta 2 interfere with anything else while it is “working in the background”?

Rosetta is a translator for Intel code. The VST-2 plugin is Intel. It has no Apple Silicon native implementation.

You have to tell WaveLab to open using Intel code through Rosetta interpreter. WaveLab is "Universal" in that it can run on both Intel or Apple Silicon. The plug-in cannot.

Rosetta doesn't "work in the background." It just interprets Intel code for the apps that require it.

Is this the Specific Computer involved in this issue ?

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) - Technical Specifications (CA)

Normally, when a Third Party Application that contains only Intel Binaries and is coded in 64 Bit - the Operating System would Prompt the user to Download any updates for Rosetta 2 without User Intervention required ..

If the same Third Party Application contains Both Intel and M1/ M2 ARMs binary code, depending on factors, the Operating System may or may not invoke Rosetta 2.

To Verify of the Third Party Application, go to Application folder and select the Application in question

Use the Get Info using Control Click

Examples for point of references as to what you are looking for

The first Application below is Intel Based and is 64 Bit. Therefore on an Apple Silicon computer Rosetta 2 would be invoked

The Second Application below is Universal and 64 Bit.

As an aside to your Main Question.

Much like, back in the day, when Apple was transitioning from the PPC to Intel based computers, there was a translator called Rosetta.

there was a period when Apple decided the Developers had had enough time to re-code their Application to run Natively on the Intel Machine Code

There after, Rosetta was no longer included in newer versions of OS X / macOS

Based upon a similar progression to present day.

Apple has now completed the Transition from Intel Based computer to All In-House ARMS Apple Silicon Machines.

It would be reasonable for Apple to follow a similar Strategy at some time the future.

Only Apple would know just if or when.

With this in mind, you may start looking now, for Alternatives for this and other Plug-in while it still is working instead of when the " Door Closes " on Non Native Apple Silicon plug ins.

Hi P. Phillips,

Thank you for these suggestions.

So, if I understand correctly, I can install Rosetta 2 on my MacBook and this will allow me to import ogg files into Audacity, WaveLab Cast, etc.

But are there any problems associated with this? Will Rosetta 2 interfere with anything else while it is “working in the background”?
