I changed the word in a Mailbox label to all caps and all the mail in the box disappeared--there is no "recovered mail" mailbox even after quit app and reload--afraid to fool with

Voila!!--after going to gmail email portal and finding all emails in that email mailbox--went back to Mailbox on iMac27 and after 20 minutes the emails came back--activity showed "indexing" then all appeared--thanks for reply--
I presume that your gmail account is set as IMAP.
The problem may be that gmail pretends to be IMAP, but isn't really. There are no actual mailboxes in gmail, but rather labels; something somehow got out of sync when that change was made.
Does the mailbox appear on both the Mac and the iPhone, and empty on both?
What happens if you try renaming it in the web client? Maybe this will jolt things.

If using IMAP Protocol, what appears on the Web Server should be reflected back in Apple Mail mail client ( Application )
Are the Missing e-mails appearing on in the Web Portal ?
In addition to what P. Phillips said: if you recall some relevant detail about a message that was there, you can try searching for it in Mail. If you can find it, it will also tell you where it is.
yes--they are all in my Gmail email portal and the mailbox name has changed to all caps--now how do I get them back into my Mail app?--I'm giving a presentation next week using my iPhone and MBPro on the screen alternately to show seniors what scams look like--

Had the same problem with Gmail and solved it. Try double click on the email account inbox in question and click "Synchronize" and you should be all good to go!
