If I install Catalina directly from High Sierra 10.13.6 will my old apps still work?

Perhaps.
Catalina and After is 64Bit-Only:
When Catalina was released, Apple when to 64bit-only. So, if you have a 32bit app, then you need to get the 64bit version. Contact the Developer, asking them if you can get the version you need. Either they'll swap out the key, or they'll charge you for a new license. It's is the Developer's call.

A "one-stop"way to check for 64-bit app compatibility is this free tool:
Thanks Allan Jones! Now I remember why I didn't upgrade years ago when they changed to 64-bit apps. I didn't want to mess up anything that was working so well! With the 1 TB SSD and the 16 gb of ram and a new battery that I installed in my mid-year 2012 MacBook Pro, my machine is really fast and works great, and I STILL don't want to mess it up. This was the last model that I know of that was user upgradeable, and I was able to upgrade to 16 gb or RAM when Apple people said it could not be done. Isn't it amazing that these older machines live far beyond Apple's and everyone else's desire to support it? Now Google Chrome is saying that they won't support my operating system in their next upgrade. I guess it won't be long before I am forced to give in and either upgrade the software for my current computer or get a whole new machine.
Thank you!
You are welcome.
