When I bought my new Mac laptop, I was told I could use the extra storage for my iPhone so I didn't have to pay extra for iCloud storage. How do I set that up?

You cannot share your Mac's storage space with your iPhone. In other words, you are not going to be able to increase the total capacity of your iPhone with the use of a Mac.

What you can do is create regular backup files of your iPhone on your Mac instead of creating backup files on iCloud. Please review the information in the following guides which will show you how to create backups of your iPhone to your Mac.
