Airtag seems locked to another Apple ID.

Airtag seems locked to another Apple ID. I have tried resetting it by repeatedly removing the battery. My ipad then sees the device, starts the connecting process and then allows me to name it. But then fails "locked to another ID."

It is rather new and I pulled the battery protector. So I don't know what needs to be done now.

An AirTag can be associated with one Apple ID. If you want to use an AirTag that someone else has used, they need to remove the AirTag from their Apple ID first. If the previous user removed the AirTag from their Apple ID but they were out of Bluetooth range of the AirTag, then you need to reset it before you can use it with your devices.

Here's how to reset your AirTag:

  1. Press down on the polished stainless steel battery cover of your AirTag and rotate counterclockwise until the cover stops rotating.
  2. Remove the cover and the battery.*
  3. Replace the battery.
  4. Press down on the battery until you hear a sound. This sound means that the battery is connected.
  5. When the sound finishes, repeat the process four more times, removing and replacing the battery, then pressing down on the battery until you hear a sound. You should hear a sound each time you press on the battery, for a total of five sounds. The fifth sound is different from the previous four. This indicates that the AirTag is now ready to pair.
  6. Replace the cover by aligning the three tabs on the cover with the three slots on your AirTag.
  7. Press down on the cover.
  8. Rotate the cover clockwise until it stops rotating.

An AirTag must be removed from the AppleID account before performing the reset (that requires removal/replacement of the battery). You must follow the process exactly as described.

First, thanks for the reply.

That's what I did. But it still says "locked to another ID" or some such. I read (or youtube watched) and there was mention of a slightly different sound after the fifth battery pull. I seem to only hear the same sound (twirp).

Also, I think I read (been all over looking) that while pulling the battery the five times stops the "original owner" (paired ID) from being able to track the airtag, it does not allow me to pair with a new ID?? If so, is that what might be happening - does not allow a new user to usurp an airtag???

Again, thanks for the reply.
