What happens to the @mac.com (and alias) when I change my AppleID email address?

Hello! I have had an @mac.com email address for ages, and use it for my AppleID. Lately it seems it's been peddled to some spammers, and I receive thousands of obscene emails every week. I'd like to associate a new email with my AppleID and eventually close down the spammed @mac.com address, but I don't want to lose the alias I created that is associated with it until I can be sure I no longer need it. I can't get a straight answer from Apple about what happens to that email address (and the alias attached to it) when I am no longer using it as an AppleID email address. Can anyone enlighten me? And how will I access it? On the web?

Update: Changed AppleID email address to a third-party provider. Apple support gave me half a dozen different stories about what would happen to my @mac.com address. Turns out the email address doesn't go away—you can still access it (defeating the purpose for me to get rid of it to get rid of a daily avalanche of obscene spam) but you can't get rid of it, or all the @me.com or @icloud.com "aliases" that Apple assigned way back when (not the email aliases you can create yourself—those are a different "alias."). As long as you keep the same AppleID, those email addresses are yours—all 3, 5, 7 of them you never chose, whether you want them or not.

But rest assured you'll get a different answer from Apple support every time you ask this question!

Hello kitkatmac,

We'd be happy to provide you with some information. Depending on when you created your iCloud account, your iCloud email addresses and aliases may end with @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com. If you have an iCloud email address, you can't change the email address associated with your Apple ID. You can learn more here: Change your Apple ID - Apple Support

If you choose to delete your Apple ID, it would also delete the aliases associated with it. Deleting your Apple is permanent and cannot be undone. You won't be able to access purchased content or data associated with your account after deleting your Apple ID. For more information, check this out: How to delete your Apple ID account - Apple Support

Spam emails are more and more common. Similar to moving to a new house, it doesn't matter what address you have, you still get junk mail. Instead of making changes to your Apple ID, we recommend utilizing junk mail filters and mail rules to avoid spam. You can learn how to do that here: Reduce junk mail in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

Thanks.

Hello kitkatmac,

The article provides the only info we can confidently say: Change your Apple ID - Apple Support

Change your Apple ID  Change your Apple ID - Apple SupportRead these two sections very carefully to see what is allowed: If your Apple ID is a third-party email address and How to change your Apple ID if it ends with @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com.

Before changing your Apple ID using a computer, sign out of all Apple services that use your Apple ID. If you are going to use an iPhone, iPad, or iPod, then stay signed in with your Apple ID on only that device. This instruction is taken from the above document under the heading Before you change your Apple ID.

For sign out purposes, see Where can I use my Apple ID? Where can I use my Apple ID? - Apple Support “This list is provided for informational purposes only and is subject to change without notice. It's not intended to include every feature or service that uses Apple ID. Visit the Apple ID support page for more information.”

And see What to do after you change your Apple ID or password

We can also say, no, it is not deleted. Your info and purchases all stay with that account. Only you can decide to delete your account if you want to go that path: How to delete your Apple ID account - Apple Support

As to how it works, it will no longer be your Apple ID. Everything will switch over to the new email you choose.

Thanks.

G'day kitkatmac,

It sounds like you're asking if you'd lose access to your purchases if you change the email address associated with your Apple ID. If you're referring to doing so by using the process in this link, you are correct that would still have access to all of your purchases: Change your Apple ID - Apple Support

On the other hand, if you're asking about signing in using a newly-created Apple ID, your purchases would not be available under that Apple ID as in that case it would be an entirely separate Apple ID and purchases are not transferrable.

We hope that answers your question.

Cheers.

Thanks for your answer, though it’s not an answer to my question. If I change my AppleID email address to a third-party address (like gmail, etc), and the old address is a @mac.com email, does that old @mac.com email continue to exist? Or does Apple delete it? In other words, this email address that I have had with Apple for years, which was my original AppleID, if it’s no longer my AppleID, does it cease to exist? Or will it continue as a standalone email address, now no longer associated with my AppleID?

Thanks for the reply, but no, that's not what I am asking.

When I first became a Mac customer, way back in 2007, I received an email address from Apple, the name@mac.com email address. That's been my AppleID email address for the past 16 years. Now I want to change the AppleID email address to a different email address, with a third-party email provider, but I would like to maintain access to the name@mac.com (and its aliases) once it is no longer being used as the email for the AppleID.

My question is, if I change my AppleID email address to something else, let's say name@gmail.com, will Apple delete the name@mac.com email address, effectively eliminating the name@mac.com email address? Or will the name@mac.com email just become a freestanding Apple email address that I can continue to use, even though it is no longer my AppleID email address?

I understand that my purchases and text messages, etc., and my access to iCloud, will transfer to the new email address. That's not an issue. Apple has explained that very clearly. What they have not explained clearly (I have gotten more than two different answers from Apple support, so that's why I'm asking here, to find out if anyone else has actually done this) is whether they will eliminate that name@mac.com email address if I am no longer using it as my AppleID.

Obviously, if my AppleID email were already a third-party email (something@gmail.com), Apple would do nothing about that since they have no control over third-party emails, but since this email was issued by Apple as part of the creation of my original AppleID, I want to know that if I stop using it as my AppleID email address, will it vanish into thin air?

Thanks!
