How to resolve a snapshot error in an APFS Volume?

Hello,

I am currently facing an issue with deleting a free partition in Disk Utility on my iMac. My intention is to delete the partition in order to install Boot Camp, but I encounter an error during the deletion process. To troubleshoot the problem, I accessed the Recovery Mode and ran the command "fsck_apfs -yp /dev/disk3". However, at the stage "** Checking the snapshot metadata.", I receive the following warning: "warning: (oid 0x16441c) apfs_extentref: btn: invalid o_chksum (0x0)". Moreover, after completing the volume check, I am notified that "** The volume /dev/rdisk3s5 was found to be corrupt and cannot be repaired".

I'm seeking assistance to overcome this situation without resorting to reinstalling the entire system or formatting the drive, as it otherwise works perfectly fine. I'm particularly interested in learning how I can delete the snapshots or take any necessary steps to resolve this issue. It's worth mentioning that the problematic volume is the OS X Base System Volume.

Thank you in advance.

Q - " This unallocated space appeared after I deleted a previous Boot Camp Windows installation (although I encountered some difficulties during the deletion process). "

A - By what specific Method was the Bootcamp Partition attempted to be removed ?

AFAIK, using any method other than the one outlined in below link from Apple may require Erasing the Entire Drive and reinstalling a fresh copy of macOS

Q - " OS X Base System Volume "

A - AFAIK this is the Recovery Volume and can not be removed except if the Entire Drive is reformatted from a Bootable Installer or equal type of External Drive of a Qualifying Version macOS

Q - " install Boot Camp "

A - One does not install Bootcamp it is installed as part of the Operating System

Q - " I am currently facing an issue with deleting a free partition in Disk Utility on my iMac "

Thank you for the clarification.

Regarding the "install Boot Camp" statement, my apologies for any confusion caused by my phrasing. I am not trying to install Boot Camp but rather install Windows on a seperate partition using Boot Camp.

Regarding the "free partition" in Disk Utility, I am referring to the unallocated space on the drive that is not assigned to any specific partition. This unallocated space appeared after I deleted a previous Boot Camp Windows installation (although I encountered some difficulties during the deletion process). I have come across information online suggesting that this free partition needs to be removed (or in other words partitioned in a way, so it belongs to the OS X Base System partition) in order to proceed with a fresh installation of Windows using Boot Camp. All in all this information is rather unimportant, as my main focus is resolving the error which "fsck_apfs" throws.

I can't quite recall the exact steps I took as it was a long time ago, but I believe I deleted a volume using Disk Utility, thinking it was associated with Windows (which, in hindsight, was probably a mistake). I resorted to this method because I was having difficulties using the official Boot Camp Utility. Interestingly, despite deleting the volume, I can still select and boot into the Windows partition, but it results in a Windows 10 Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Strangely enough, this issue didn't cause any problems until now, and the snapshot error only appeared after I updated to macOS Ventura. Overall I just want to fix the Snapshot error, I can live with the broken Bootcamp partition.

To be honest, that a bit above my knowledge base .

The " volume /dev/rdisk3s5 " on a normally working Ventura with Apple Silicon computer would correspond with

APFS Volume Data                    22.3 GB    disk3s5
