How to recycle old MacBook?
I have a MacBook from 2009 that is broken and no longer turns on. I never wiped it. How can I destroy the hard drive? Can I send it to Apple?

You can certainly recycle through Apple, an electronics retailers, or perhaps with your locality. If memory serves, you can remove the back cover and take out the hard drive on a 2009 MacBook. If you are unable to wipe the drive, you could drill through it, smash it, etc.
Scroll to the bottom of this page to the section labeled "Recycling" to see what Apple will recycle for you:
As for removing the hard drive—which is what I would do—we are not allowed to post links to self-repair sites.
However, a web search for "2009 xxx hard drive removal" should get what you need. Replace my "xxx" with the actual model name. Apple has MacBooks, MacBook Airs, and MacBook Pros; all get called "Macbooks" by some users here. To get the best info, use the full model name if you have MacBook Air or MacBook Pro.
