Good afternoon tobyen,
If you enabled iCloud to sync photos across all of your devices using the same Apple ID, the resource below will help you understand how this works:
Set up iCloud Photos on all your devices
You can't see the contents of your Photos library in Finder. However, you can do a search for photos that you have not imported to Photos in Finder using the "Kind" field/column.
Narrow your search results on Mac
Get to know the Finder on your Mac
View and edit files with Quick Look on Mac
Take care.

Hello tobyen,
When syncing devices with iCloud, photos are stored in their respective locations. On an iPhone, for example, they are in the Photos app. In a Mac, it's a similar situation and is described at Browse your photos in Photos on Mac - Apple Support.
When deleting a photo either from the app or iCloud, that change will go to all devices synced with iCloud. So for example, deleting a photo from an iPhone will delete it from iCloud as well as the Mac.
Take care!
I so appreciate your reply, Shannon, but it doesn’t address my issue since my Mac doesn’t yet have all its pictures in the Photos app.
I get that warning message without further explanation about what sounds like potential to delete photos elsewhere! But where????
Thanks,
Toby
Thank you, Judy 🙏

Have a good one.
Thank you. I’m working on the great suggestions.
