So how can I use the tag thing to find lost luggage 3000 miles away

I’m not understanding how the tag thing works if my device has to be close. Like if I put it in my suitcase and it gets lost. Obviously my phone won’t be within Bluetooth range…..

AirTag

The AirTag emits a Bluetooth signal. If another iPhone is nearby, and the phone's owner enabled "Find My Network" on it, it will receive the signal and forward it to the Apple servers. From there, you would be able to "see" it in the Find My app on your iPhone. That's how potentially know where your suitcase is.

FWIW, I have used AirTags with my luggage to track that it has made it to my final destination while traveling.

AirTag works fine using what is known as Crowdsourcing Technology. If there are any iPhones in close vicinity to the AirTag, this will allow the AirTag to report to Apple's servers on its location.

For example, on a recent trip to London, I used Find My to locate a bag that was "missing" when we arrived at Heathrow. The correct location of the bag was displayed...... unfortunately at DFW AirPort about 5 thousand miles away.

ah…..I was understanding that it had to be MY device. After last year with my baggage in a pile of 10,000+ items due to a baggage handler strike, I was hoping to have a way to track it. Forgive me if I’m not used to using devices like this. My son got them for my 93 yr old mom who will need to figure it out 🥹

it’s one more thing to teach her
