I read about some Macbook pros being banned from airlines. I specifically going to purchase a MacBook Air 15 for traveling and will need to take on an airplane.
Besides a yes or now answer, I would like some official response.

It looks like it was a FAA ban on certain models that had recalled (possibly defective) batteries. Not a general ban on all laptops or all Mac laptops.

The decision would be left to the discretion of the airline. I know of no airline that prohibits them. There is no overall industry-wide or US government ban.
The only restriction is that lithium ion batteries generally can not be in checked-baggage.
(they need to carried-on w/ you)
