If I repurchase a formerly DRM protected album, will I get it without DRM?

So, I generally never buy from iTunes, but I have one album that I purchased from there many years ago because it was iTunes exclusive. Back when I bought it, iTunes still had DRM protection on everything, and to this day, I am constantly getting annoyed by having to regularly reauthorize my MacBook or else I get an error message when I sync my iPhone or iPad that the 10 songs on this one album are not authorized and can't be synced.

Putting aside the question of why I need to continually reauthorize the same computer (even though I am never unauthorizing it), I am wondering if I bite the bullet and simply repurchase this album now, will I get a non-DRM protected copy to replace the protected one I have from years back?

If it matters, the computer is a MacBook Pro from mid-2015 (not an option for me to select when choosing the related device for this post so I chose the 2017-2020 version) running macOS Monterey 12.6.6. The syncing devices are an iPhone 14 Pro (iOS 16.5) and an iPad Pro (5th gen, iPadOS 16.5).

Mapachusetts,

Assuming you are still using the same Apple ID as the original purchase, the iTunes Store will not let you buy it again. It will say Play instead of giving the price. (Go ahead and verify this in the Store.)

You can buy an unprotected copy from a different music download store and add it to your iTunes/Music library, and delete the DRM-infected copy.

As U recall, it was Apple that convinced the record companies to sell music in electronic form at all.

All of the early music services that had major label music used DRM. When the record companies allowed Amazon and Apple to sell music without DRM, Apple dropped it, and offered the ability to upgrade many DRMed songs to non-DRMed ones (for a fee). The reason you don’t remember the other “services” is that they withered and died instead of making a transition to be competitive and DRM-free.

Songs that you buy from the ITunes Store and Amazon MP3 Store are still internally marked to identify you as the purchaser, although they do not contain DRM.

So I just went ahead and bit the bullet and bought it again. It appears somewhat successful, in that I was able to download the album, and manually delete the old version. However, now instead of getting the previous annoying error message when I sync, instead I now get asked if I want to transfer purchased files back to my computer. I guess Apple can't handle selling me anything without some sort of shackle, not sure why they make it so complicated, but I guess that reaffirms my decision to shop elsewhere. Thanks anyway though!
