Copying Photos to Computer Incomplete

For years now I copied photos from my phone to my Windows computer without issue. I'm now running the current release of iOS 16 with an iPhone 14 Pro. Windows 10 is V22H2, all maintenance applied and plenty of storage space on target, (606GB free). I highlight a folder, CRTL-C, select a target and CRTL-V. The process starts and appears to work but of the 167 originals only 55 get copied.

If I go back and highlight the missing files, CRTL-C and CRTL-V in target folder the missing files copy.

Of note, the copy starts normally, copies 54 of the files starting with the lowest image numbers, skips 112, and copies the last file.

I tried this more than once. It also happened when I copied multiple folders from my iPhone.

Windows, Windows 6

So I thought I would determine if this was a phone issue or computer issue. I installed iTunes on another Windows 10 computer, all maintenance applied, no Malwarebytes, updated iTunes to latest and ran copy.

Coped at the folder level. Sure enough it copied up to IMG_4934, pause and failed. No error message, the copy box just disappeared as it does in any Windows copy task when the copy is complete.

So this is not a computer (machine level) issue. Could be a Windows issue, more likely an iOS 16 bug.

Thanks for responding.

I called Apple and explained the situation. They suggested I reset the network settings to clear any residual VPN leftovers. ( I had deleted the VPN app several responses back.)

After that they couldn't help. Suggested I call Microsoft. I reminded them they won't have any abilities to see into phone. Apple was unprepared to look at the data on the phone. I asked if they could run a trace on the copy process, NO.

So basically it is my problem. Outstanding support from one of the world's largest technology companies.

Thanks again to everyone who responded. Appreciate your time.

There appears to be no corruption, at least that is obvious. The file it stops at, IMG_4935, copies fine. So does IMG_4934. The copy stops when I copy a large range of files that includes IMG_4934 and IMG_4935. So say if I copy IMG_4925 through IMG_4940.

I don't think this has ever happen before. That said if one or two files are missing when you copy hundreds, especially at the folder level there is no way to tell unless you audit each folder.

I caught it this time as the progress bar was about one third across the complete bar when it just just disappeared. That had me questioning status so I audited.

I don't believe this has ever happened before as I have copied large folders, vacation pictures, and no large swath of files were missing. In this case there were 112 pictures missing, so several days. I would have noticed this once I started to view on computer.

Thanks very much for your reply.

So I went to my iPhone and I deleted my VPN app. I then went to my Windows computer and I quit Malwarebytes. I checked I have the latest version of iTunes installed, I do, V 12.12.9

Yes iCloud photos is turned on and yes I keep originals on my phone.

Reran copy and it still fails. Interestingly it always fails at the same photo. Image 4935. (IMG_4935). Nothing special that I can see about this picture, just a statue, 6.3MB. I tried several times and once it skipped 4935 and 4936 but copied 165 of the 167 photos. So it is something about image 4935 ??

I even tried starting the copying from IMG_4934 to end. Only got two images, 4934 and the last. So then I tried starting the copying from IMG_4935 to end. It copied everything.

Not sure what this is telling me. Is it IMG_4935 or how the hand off between copying IMG_4934 and IMG_4935 is handled?

I should add that none of these pictures have been edited on phone and I don't use "Live". When I transfer photos I have the setting "Automatic" selected in Photos settings. (Late edit - I tried again with Keep Originals - so rather than jpg's it transfers in Apple format (HEIC) and it still fails at 4935)

What ever it is it is consistent.

Now I do have all 167 photos on my Windows computer and I can copy the complete folder within windows without issue. So it is something about copying from phone and the handshakes that are going on between these devices.

I don't use Windows Import.

Hi Kens,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

With your photos not completely copying to your PC, you want to make sure that you're running the latest version of iTunes for your computer. Restart your computer and make sure that you're not connected to a VPN or security software installed that could affect the way data is processed on your computer.

Import to your Windows PC
You can import photos to your PC by connecting your device to your computer and using the Windows Photos app:
1. Update to the latest version of iTunes on your PC. Importing photos to your PC requires iTunes 12.5.1 or later.
2. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your PC with a USB cable.
3. If asked, unlock your iOS or iPadOS device using your passcode.
4. If you see a prompt on your iOS or iPadOS device asking you to Trust This Computer, tap Trust or Allow to continue.
Then, visit Microsoft's website to learn how to import photos to the Windows Photos app in Windows 10 or Windows 11.
If you have iCloud Photos turned on, you need to download the original, full resolution versions of your photos to your iPhone or iPad before you import to your PC.
When you import videos from your iOS or iPadOS device to your PC, some might be rotated incorrectly in the Windows Photos app. You can add these videos to iTunes to play them in the correct orientation.
If you want to ensure photos from your iOS or iPadOS device have the best compatibility with Windows 10 or Windows 11, try these steps:
1. On your iOS or iPadOS device, open the Settings app.
2. Tap Camera, then tap Formats.
3. Tap Most Compatible. From now on, your camera will create photos and videos in JPEG and H.264 formats.

You can find these steps in Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone or iPad to your Mac or PC - Apple Support.

Regards.

I had the same problems. Some photos or videos that are larger, or edited will not copy to my PC. No problem though if you had a Mac. I was suggested by Apple help to buy a double sided memory stick, USB on one side and lightning on the other. Insert the lightning end into your phone, copy photos to it and when done, insert the USB side to your PC. This for some reason copies ALL photos. The memory stick Apple suggested to buy is Sandisk iXpand.

It really works. It’s an extra step but cut my frustration out of it.
