Why can't I save any document, scanned item, or anything else to my MacBook Air desktop, when I used to be able to do this a month ago? What changed? My software is up-to-date.

Sounds like the actual folder is no longer accessible for some reason.
In Finder, click on Macintosh HD, then Users, then on your name, and make sure there is a Desktop folder there.
If not, create it manually.
If it is there, click once one it, and then do Command + I to get the Info pane. Scroll to the bottom, and make sure your user has Read & Write privileges for it.
Also, if it's not there, did you recently make any changes? Like moving the Desktop folder out to an external drive for instance?

What happens when you try? Error messages?
What's the name of your Mac's hard drive then?
You can try clicking the "Your Name's MBA" in the side bar and then on your Macs hard drive in there.
Look for this icon (even if the label is different):

Do you get an error? If so, what does it say?
How are you trying to save anything?
Are you downloading from a website?
Creating a document in an App?
Moving a file from an external storage device?
Explain the issue in as much detail as possible, and someone may be able to advise.
First off, in Finder, on the sidebar where Desktop and Documents are listed, when I click on either one, the following message is stated: '"The operation can't be completed because the original item for "(Documents or Desktop)" can't be found.'" I cannot also drag anything to my desktop in order to save it to my desktop.
Macintosh HD is not in the sidebar. I did not make any changes recently.
