M2 dual display solutions

Apple advertises the M2 MacBook Air as supporting only a single external monitor.

I don't work for Apple, but I feel pretty certain that Apple does not view the lack of dual-monitor support as a bug or defect. It may be a hardware limitation that they can only lift by designing a new processor chip. In any case, since Apple didn't promise dual external monitor support, don't hold your breath waiting for a "fix" to retroactively add it.

As for workarounds, there is DisplayLink, where you use a DisplayLink-equipped device (hub/dock/adapter/display) in connection with a third-party driver that runs on your Mac (or PC).

I use a Plugable DisplayLink adaptor with my M2 MBA. Works great and wasn't too expensive on Amazon

A lot of compressed video updates will be sent out over whatever path you choose. Attach the adapter to a dock, and everything else attached to that dock will be forced to compete for the bandwidth available on the computer <-> dock link.

Which may not be an issue at all, if the other accessories are things like keyboards, mice, printers, and memory card readers. MIght not be much of an issue even for hard drives.

But if you try attaching it through the dock (for convenience) and you run into performance problems, you could try moving the adapter to its own port to see if that clears up the issues.

Here's the Synaptics site (where you get the drivers to use with DisplayLink devices). Presumably the vendor of your DisplayLink-device will supply you with drivers or a pointer to this site, but just in case …
