How long do SIM cards last?

I feel like this maybe a dumb question but how long do SIM cards last before they go into sim failure because I had a SIM card for about 4 years and about three weeks ago it went into sim failure and got a new one and it took about like a week to activate, a few days after i got it, it activated then next day it deactivated again so I’m just wondering how long do SIM cards last and how many times I would have to get a new one in about roughly ten years or so?

I try to get a free swap out no more than every three years. Technology changes (towers, etc) can cause issues. I am also in a heat intensive environment which someone told me can cause issues. Whenever I go to my carrier, they will usually do it for free. I am surprised that it has taken that long to activate. You may also look at getting an eSim (assuming you have an iPhone since you posted your question here. . . . and ever a dumb question. The only dumb questions are the ones that aren't asked.
