What about earlier software apple devices

Wifi passwords cannot be found on Apple devices, they can only be found on the wifi router itself. This is to maintain security (e.g. if a person has your Apple device they cannot read your wifi password). Here are some places you can find your wifi password (this will vary depending on the model of wifi router you have):

• Printed on a label attached to the wifi router itself.
• On the wifi router configuration page. You will need to type in the website address of your router to access the page. The address can be printed on the router, or you can search online for the manual/documentation which may list the address.

That is a good point, the device is indeed storing the password so it can reconnect to a wifi network.

I understand my explanation could have been rephrased: It is not possible to show a wifi password on an Apple device after it has connected to the network. So if another person took your Apple device, they could use your wifi on that device but would need to know how to log into the router configuration page (or have physical router access) to get the password in plain text.

If you successfully join a password-protected network, your device will remember the information that it needs to automatically re-connect to that network in the future. That implies that it is storing the WiFi password, and that if your device is unlocked, and falls into someone else's hands, they will be able to use your lost (or stolen) device to access the WiFi network.
