When my text messaging screen is open I can not here a notification. Only when screen is closed. Is there a fix

When my text messaging screen is open I can not here a notification. Only when screen is closed. Is there a fix for this so I can here when I get a message with the text screen is open. Or at least make the sound louder.

Apple support have an article online (link below) that may help:

(ie: you can change the sound(s) or change to one you can hear ... (or you can download other tones from iTunes)
