docx to pages

I have a docx document size 17 KB. I opened it with pages and saved it, size 801KB. I then exported the pages document as a pdf. The size shows as 58KB. Why is this?

Because Pages translates that Word .docx document into Pages internal (.pages) document format, that will cause the Pages document to larger than the Word document, and then Pages must translate the Pages document format again to produce the PDF. Just the way Pages is designed and nothing you can do about it unless you want to stick with Word (or LibreOffice) to avoid size expanding document translations.
