You have only 2 weeks to disable 2fa, but since you have done it today, you should have received a confirmation email. In that email, there should be a link to disable it. If you have not received an email, then sign on to your Apple ID page at https://appleid.apple.com and there should be an option to disable it in the security settings.

I had not realized it was now mandatory as well. I referred to this Apple Support Article dated April 13, 2023.

Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support

It states: "If you're already using two-factor authentication with your Apple ID, you can't turn it off. If you updated to two-factor authentication inadvertently, you can turn it off within two weeks of enrollment. If you do, your account is less secure and you can't use features that require a higher level of security."

Thanks again for the updated info.
