new folders in FCPX library storage area

in FCPX Mac 10.6.6, I created a new library on my external storage disk, and the new library icon appeared along with new separate folders. They were labeled, final cut original media, final cut optimized media, and final cut proxy media. Inside each are date folders. What is their function and are they necessary? These were not seen in past versions of FCPX Library's

It seems that, as Tom surmised, the storage location for your library is set to the same drive as the library itself, as opposed to "in library". That is perfectly fine - in fact many people prefer to keep media outside the library.

If you want, you can revert this.

Open the library in FCP, select it in the browser sidebar, and open the Inspector (command-4).

Next to Storage Locations, click "Modify Settings".

Switch the media location to In library, and then click Consolidate.

This will move all the media to the library.
