in FCPX Mac 10.6.6, I created a new library on my external storage disk, and the new library icon appeared along with new separate folders. They were labeled, final cut original media, final cut optimized media, and final cut proxy media. Inside each are date folders. What is their function and are they necessary? These were not seen in past versions of FCPX Library's
iMac 24″, macOS 13.3
Here are screen shots of what is in my external media storage drive. Bottom one is when you open the media drive, top shot is the folders inside the folder of FC media, middle screenshot is of the clips inside the last folder of date. It seems that, as Tom surmised, the storage location for your library is set to the same drive as the library itself, as opposed to "in library". That is perfectly fine - in fact many people prefer to keep media outside the library.
If you want, you can revert this.
Open the library in FCP, select it in the browser sidebar, and open the Inspector (command-4).
Next to Storage Locations, click "Modify Settings".
Switch the media location to In library, and then click Consolidate.
This will move all the media to the library.
That’s what happens if you set the root level of the storage drive as the location for your media. It looks as if you set the drive and consolidated. Unfortunately if you have multiple libraries pointing to the same root level of the drive all the media from all the libraries gets dumped into those folders.
Can you post screenshots of what you’re seeing where?
FCP does create date folders if you assign a folder or drive as a storage location.
