Filevault Issues with Intel Processors, M1, M2, T2, in an Enterprise Format

I am a Customer Care representative for a University and have been recently having issues with Macs. Specifically, with Filevaulted laptops. Our university policy since Covid in 2020, has been to encrypt all laptops so WFH stations are better protected. An issue that I have come across with 5 users now, is while trying to log into their computers, their screen freezes when the login loading bar reaches about 75%. This only happens to remote workers off campus. So far, I have only seen this with Intel Processor Macs (around 2017/2018 manufacture date), but we don't have enough M2 chips in production to determine if those will have this same issue in the future.

Now I understand that I may be wrong when it comes to the issue being with the processors, but the article linked has lead me to believe that the data with T2 security chips stores in the Flash Memory, as opposed to computers without T2 security chips storing data in the Start up ram.

When the users come onto campus, I have been able to get users logged in when using an ethernet adapter and hardwiring the laptop into our network. Could the issue be potentially with the P Ram of the Mac? I had a coworker suggest researching that and I am in progress of doing so, but I am not a Mac expert and would really appreciate some additional insight.

The second link listed does give me some insight on how the encryption typically works in a SOHO setting, but not in an enterprise format while using JAMF.

Also this has happened across multiple Macbook versions (Air 2017 and 2018, Macbook Pro 2019 (all 3 prior are intel processors), and a 2020 version I can not recall currently but did have an M1 chip.

Hey DomBred,

On the Intel Mac computers, try a NVRAM reset: Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

If you haven't already, try booting into Safe Mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

"Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed."

Let us know if this resolves the startup issues those Mac computers are facing.

Take care.

First, the 2017 MBAir is completely different than the 2018+ models. Only the 2018+ Intel models have a T2 security chip. The 2017 model does not have any Tx chip. If the 2017 model is having the same issue, then you are looking at some more generic macOS issue. FYI, the 2017 MBAir has the Magsafe 2 charger and no USB-C ports. The manufacturing date has nothing to do with the various models. If you go to "About This Mac" you will see a year listed for each model....that "year" is just a model designation and may not always even be the year it was first introduced (although it is usually close).

Filevault should not really be an issue although it may cause some problems with the 2018+ models if the T2 chip has an issue....I have seen some bugs with the implementation of the T2 chip & authenticating.

Try booting into Safe Mode to see if it makes any difference. More likely is some sort of software issue with some third party app, or perhaps some configuration issue since these are being managed. Usually if a boot gets stuck at that point it is a software issue....with older Macs using a hard drive, it could also mean a failing drive, but not as likely with SSD which most often fail at power on or when waking from sleep.

Are there more than one user on these laptops? If so, then does the same thing occur when logging into another user?

Are these users logging into a local macOS user account or into an AD account?
