GB for a MacBook Pro

Hi

I bought a MacBook Pro on the 8th of June 2023 and when I checked the storage it showed 28.47GB of 494.38 GB used. I would have thought it should say 28.47 GB of 512 GB used. I know that their are pre uploaded apps already on the Mac Pro but with my iPhone 14 storage it says 35.7GB of 128GB which is what was stated I would be getting when purchasing.

I am wondering why the laptop amount is different?

Could it be a used laptop sent back and resold?

Does anyone else have this or similar to this.

Should I take it back to apple?

Thanks any info would be appreciated.

This is a completely normal thing to see with any device using SSD or similar flash media storage devices.

The difference between the stated capacity and the actual capacity is mainly due to the way that storage manufacturers and computer manufacturers define a scale and a handful of other reasons.

Drives will never be 100% accurate at matching the stated size they're marketed at - and believe it or not, but your iPhone is likely not exactly 128gb even though it shows that it is.

This is nothing to worry about and is normal/expected. For reference I'm attaching a screenshot of my own macbook's storage; I have a MacBook Pro 14-inch, M1, 2021 and my SSD size is exactly the same as yours.
