How do I change the genre of songs? Can I attach genres to albums
Control (right) - click on the track(s) or album and select Get Info from the contextual menu:
In the Get Info window under General go to the Genre menu and select the genre you want to associate the track/album with:

I understand the meaning of the word, but I thought that, when I set up the music app and installed all of my CDs, I assigned the genre in the column appropriated for each song, which leads me to believe that I can change the genre of an individual song, in the "Songs" section.
Gotcha, you're wanting to change a label.

"Genre" is a category of artistic expression: jazz, modern, folk and etc. How would you change the nature of a song?
Control (right) click on the song or album and select Get Info.
Just be careful what you change there, because it can have other undesired results.
