MacBook Pro running OSX 10.9.5

I have an (obviously) old Mac that we're trying to make usable for our niece. It seems functional (turns on, restarts, displays, runs applications, etc.). I'm pretty sure it's connected to the internet: at least it says it is. But when I try to access any site using Safari, I either get a message saying that Safari can't establish a secure connection or one saying that the website certificate is not valid.

I've got a never MacBook, an iPhone, and an iPad that are all working fine.

Software update shows nothing to update.

Any ideas?

Many browsers do not support 10.9 any more, and some sites do not recognize the certificates for the version of Safari (v7) associated with Mac 10.9 Mavericks. The current version of Safari is v16.

Please do "About this Mac..." from your Apple menu and tell us the sub-model. Only that will tell us if you have an OS upgrade path available, otr other browser options.

Sample from an older iMac:

The sub-model of your Macbook Pro will be where the example shows "27-inch Mid 2010."

you MUST apply all software updates to 10.9 and obtain Safari version 9.

older versions of Ssafari, such as the one included in 10.9, do not support proper encryption. They try to use older SSL, and the Internet now uses TLS, its replacement

Safari 9 was originally released in MacOS 10.11 El Capitan, and was provide later as a security upgrade as far back as 10.9 Mavericks.

Making Use of 10.9.5 Today:

Use a Virtual Machine (VM):

You could probably connect this to the Web using a Virtual Machine of Windows XP. You would associate the Windows version to it. Windows XP is what I just on my M1 Mac. I need to run programs that are unavailable on a Mac. A Virtual Machine I used, while your Mac is running in the background. All would be accessed and would operate as desired on the VM.

Two Virtual Machine programs that I've used include VMWare Fusion and Parallels. Regardless, you cannot access both purchases between the Virtual Machines even. Learn more here: What Is a Virtual Machine? - VMware Support. As for a compatible version, that may a bit tough to come by. So, look on amazon for a version that is compatible with your macOS.

Why to Use a VM:

My whole point of using a VM is to use a different browser —Internet Explorer. You’d enable DHCP and FTP for the VM. From what you’ve mentioned, it’s a method of troubleshooting that I’d expect you to be aware of.

what version of Sarai is installed?

if any less that version 9, use software update from the  Menu launch the Mac App Store and use the Updates pane to apply all updates.

If 'software update' is not present on the  Menu, launch the Mac App Store and see if updates are available.

My 10.9.5 Mavericks version is running Safari 9.1.3, and can reach most encrypted sites.
