the name you entered can't be used

I’m trying to set up my new MacBook Pro and can’t get past the Create a computer account screen. It says “The name you entered can’t be used. The name is not available. Enter a different name”. I have another Mac, an older 2016 model and I tried to sign in to the new one with the same apple id.
