MOVE iMessage attachments to icloud

Messages is using 18GB on my Mac running 13.3.1. I want to MOVE - not delete - the attachments to icloud. How do I do that? Thanks.

Hi aaric,

Thanks for the followup. If you use iCloud for Messages, your messages and attachments would be saved in iCloud: Set up iCloud for Messages on all your devices - Apple Support

There is not a setting for moving specific attachments from Messages to iCloud. If you want to save specific attachments, you'd need to download them and then sync them to iCloud from Photos, iCloud Drive, etc.

If you'd like to leave feedback regarding this feature, you can do so here: Product Feedback - Apple

Take care.

Hey there aaric,

If you already have iCloud Messages enabled in your devices(in this case Mac), then your Messages attachments are already synced with iCloud. While you already know that there's a way to delete attachments in Messages, you can always to choose to save it to a specific location prior to deleting any that you want to keep.

We recommend reviewing this entire article as it has a lot of great details about using Messages on your Mac, but it shows more details about this under the 'Find photos and other attachments from conversations' here: Use Messages on your Mac

Just in case you have portable devices, this link shows how to do this from an iOS/iPadOS device under the section 'Find attachments from a conversation' here: Use Messages on your iPhone or iPad

Cheers!

Hello aaric,

It sounds like you have iCloud for Messages enabled on your iPhone, is it enabled on your Mac?

On your iPhone, how much storage do you see used by Messages in iCloud when you go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud >Tap Show All, and then tap Messages? We ask because if you have iCloud for Messages set up on all of your devices and you're seeing a discrepancy on your devices, we recommend that you reach out to Apple for more help: Get Support

Thanks.

Thanks, but that's not what I'm looking for.

In iOS, I have Messages configured so that only some of the attachments are local on my phone, and the rest are on icloud and downloaded if I request them. I want the same configuration on my Mac.

Going through one by one to copy and then delete attachments isn't a workable option.

Thanks
