If you are already signed in to your Apple ID on your iPhone or iPad , and when you go into messages and the sign in button is greyed out, If you tap and place the cursor after the last letter of your Apple ID and tap Return on your keyboard you should see “verifying…” and then your Apple ID should log in. This also works for FaceTime as well if you are having the same sign in button grayed out there as well.

If an app or feature on your device is not working or is restricted (grayed out), it may have been disabled using Screen Time, or by an IT administrator if you are using a device owned by an employer or educational institution.
- Read this document about using Screen Time on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch --> Use Screen Time on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Tap Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy > scroll to Allow Changes.
- If the device is managed (Settings > General > VPN & Device Management), contact the IT department that is doing the managing.
a vpn had nothing to do with it, i managed to sign back in to imessage
i did this by signing out of my iphone (settings > your name > sign out) and signing back in
doing this does delete all cards and passes from apple wallet but it kept my apple keychain, contacts and previous imessages
I confirm this works in iPadOS 17.5. But why it works, nobody knows. Absolutely bizarre.
I have never used a VPN. Some have mentioned needing to uninstall it completely, not just disabling it.
If you can’t turn on or sign in to iMessage or FaceTime read this support article --> If you can’t turn on or sign in to iMessage or FaceTime - Apple Support
- Note the sections at the bottom about "Still not activated...?" and "Get more help."
i own the device and it's not under management
screen time was just disabled, (i set it up myself a while ago) i'll check back in 24 hours to see if the button isn't restricted anymore but i'm not sure what'll happen since i never had contact restrictions set with screen time
the rest of my reply isn't showing up, will repeat it just in case
screen time was just turned off, i'll check back in 24hrs to see if isn't restricted ( screen time also never had contact or app limits on messages)
attempting to send a message just results in an error telling me to activate imessage
Hi I can’t sign in the button is grey and I tried to re enter my email but it won’t let me verify
