Do you ever hope to download any apps to your iPhone? Most apps, even free apps, offer what are called in-app purchases. If you don't have a payment method tied to your Apple Account, you won't be able to download these apps, even if they are free. That means no Facebook. No Twitter. No WhatsApp. No Youtube. No Netflix, etc.

Having a payment method tied to your account doesn't mean you ever have to buy something. But you will find it VERY limiting to not have one.
