External CDD/DVD reader not connecting to MacBook Pro.

I have an external CD/DVD reader connected to my MacBook Pro through a USB hub, USB-C to USB-A. I’m getting a message that the “USB Accessory needs power. Connect Apple USB…” to a USB port on this Mac.”

the reader has a USB-C connected to a hub that is connected to a USB-A port on the MacBook. Why is that not working? I tried supplying more power by using a USB-A port on the hub to connect to a charger but that didn’t work either. I bought all of these products at the same time so they’d be compatible. ???

should read: " ... DIRECTLY to a port on the chassis" so that it can get enough power to actually power up and work.


 menu > about this Mac > (System Report) > USB ...

... can show you power avaiable and desired:
