IOS Mail - GMAIL account error

Hi,

having the exact same issue as this person:

Apple Mail & Gmail Account error issue

My main gmail account works just fine. I'm now trying to add two more accounts (both kids) to my wife's and my iPhone. We're both running into the same issue.

1) we can compose and send new emails

2) we cannot receive/fetch new emails in Inbox

3) receiving/fetching emails works fine in the Gmail App. Just not in the IOS mail app.

Keeps saying (very generic error): "Account Error - <mail account> is currently unavailable"

Same as the person in the other post I've noticed when (re)adding the account, it automatically disables the mail sync (only enables contacts and calendar)

So out of the 3 GMAIL accounts I added to my mail app, only 1 works (my own). Both the kid's accounts are failing.

I've had a lengthy conversation with Google support and they were unable to help.

I have the same problem an had a conversation with the google families help support team. They told me that its not possible to use SMTP/IMAP or 3rd party apps to access a childs account ("supervised account"). Its only possible with the google apps.

If you can't receive emails on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

If you can’t receive emails in the Mail app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, there are a few things you can try.

Before you begin

There are a few things to bear in mind and check:

  • When you make an iOS or iPadOS backup in iCloud or iTunes, it will back up your email settings, but not your emails. If you delete or change your email account settings, previously downloaded emails may be removed from your device.
  • Make sure your device is connected to the Internet.
  • Check with your email service provider to find out if there's a service outage.
  • If you can't access your emails or can't send and receive messages with your @icloud.com email address, find out what to do.

Check your email address and password

If the Mail app asks you to enter a password for your email account, make sure your password is correct. To check your email address and password, sign in to your email provider's website.

If you're still experiencing a user name or password error, contact the email provider or system administrator.

Check Mail Fetch and Notification settings

By default, Fetch New Data settings are based on what's provided by your email service. If Push isn't available as a setting, your account will default to Fetch. These settings will affect how your device receives emails. To adjust these settings:

  1. Go to Settings > Mail, then tap Accounts.
  2. Tap Fetch New Data.
  3. Choose a setting – such as Automatically or Manually – or choose a schedule for how often the Mail app will fetch data.

With iOS 11 and later, and iPadOS, Automatically is set by default. Your device will only fetch new data in the background when it is charging and connected to Wi-Fi.

Make sure your Notification settings are correct for the Mail app:

  1. Go to Settings, then tap Notifications.
  2. Tap Mail, then tap an email account.
  3. Adjust your Alerts, Sounds and Badges.

Contact your email provider or system administrator

  1. Contact your email provider or check their status web page to see if there's a service outage.
  2. Ask your email provider or system administrator if you have turned on any security features or restrictions, such as two-step verification, for your email account. You might need a special password or you may need to request authorisation from your email provider to send and receive emails on your device.
  3. Check your email account settings with your email provider or system administrator to make sure they're correct.

Remove your email account and set it up again

  1. On your computer, sign in to your email provider’s website. Make sure all of your emails are there or make sure your emails have been saved somewhere other than your device.
  2. On your device, go to Settings > Mail, then tap Accounts.
  3. Tap the email account you want to remove.
  4. Tap Delete Account.
  5. Add your account again.

If these steps don't work, contact your email service provider for more information.

Seems like Google simply doesn't allow viewing emails via the native mail app for Google supervised accounts. Not sure why they restrict that. I have a current scenario where I need to keep an eye on an update for my five year old son's global entry application and want to know when that confirmation comes through. I guess I will have to check his inbox on the web.

Father of 4 here — appears to be deep in Google managed account settings, and maybe a bug, or some child protection invisible to the family managers.

I have 4 kids: 2 older, two younger. For the older kids (managed by goog family links), mail sync no problem. For the younger 2 (managed same family links), mail sync fail with the generic error everyone’s complaining about. I compared one of the working older kids accounts to one of the failing younger — each setting, one by one — and they all match. I tried toggling the settings. No change. I tried changing the age of the child to appear slightly older— no change. (But that might still be an issue, because I recall trying to set up a child account in a managed family, but starting just by creating the account for a young user, and google errors with a “sorry, you’re not old enough…” but then if I try again and make the age older (even well over 21), it still fails, because goog doesn’t trust that device/browser/cache. Good I suppose, to thwart a kid trying to bypass. But easily corrected by just using another device briefly and remembering to set the age older….

So, anyway, all this to say I’m suspicious about the account age because my two older kids work just fine. And I recall Google not always trusting users (even grown adults) if you start fiddling with the ages.

My accounts still don’t work, but maybe this helps point to where the problem is?

If it is not the Gmail App google may not be able to help.

It is not clear from your post how did you add those accounts on the iOS mail app.

Add an email account to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Go to Settings > Mail, then tap Accounts.
  2. Tap Add Account, then select your email provider (Google).
  3. Enter your email address and password***.
  4. If you see Next, tap Next and wait for Mail to verify your account.
  5. If you see Save, tap Save.

Add an email account to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

*** If you may have enabled two step verification on Google --> Sign in with App Passwords - Google Account Help. Do not use Gmail App Passowrd. That will not work.

Hi @SravanKra,

yes, followed those exact same steps to add the account(s). I also checked all the settings, and they are 100% the same between my own working account and the two kid's non-working accounts.

I've verified (also with Google support): 2-step authentication is turned OFF

I just wish the error notification was a little more helpful. 'Account error' doesn't tell me anything.

Since the app is clearly running into an issue, it would be useful if it could tell me what exact issue it's having! :-)
