Urgent Data Recovery Request for a Stolen MacBook Air - Young Researcher in Dire Need

Dear Apple Support Team,

I am writing to you with profound concern and hope, as we currently face a devastating situation that could jeopardize my girlfriend's years of hard work and her aspirations to contribute to the academic community in the field of management studies.

Recently, while conducting fieldwork in Spain, my girlfriend fell victim to a theft that left her without her bag, passport, cash, credit cards, and, most tragically, her MacBook Air containing her invaluable research data and files. As a young and promising researcher focusing on organizational gender issues, specifically allyship, she has dedicated four years of her life to this groundbreaking work. Regrettably, not all of her data was backed up to iCloud, and the loss of her laptop has left her feeling utterly hopeless, alone, and stranded in an unfamiliar country.

In light of the gravity of this situation and the potential impact of her research on the academic community and real-world gender dynamics, I kindly request your assistance in recovering the data from her stolen MacBook Air. I understand that this is an extraordinary request, but I believe that if there is any chance of salvaging her work, it lies in the hands of the capable and compassionate professionals at Apple.

My girlfriend's research on allyship is not only vital to her academic career but also to the ongoing discourse on gender issues in the workplace. As a company that values innovation and the pursuit of knowledge, I hope you recognize how valuable her work is and will do everything in your power to help us retrieve her lost data.

To facilitate the process, I am more than willing to provide any necessary information, such as the MacBook's serial number, Apple ID, and any other relevant details that could aid in the data recovery process. Once the data is recovered, we would be immensely grateful if you could assist in transferring it to a new MacBook.

Thank you for taking the time to read my plea and for considering our predicament. My girlfriend's future, as well as her ability to continue contributing to the betterment of society through her research, depends on your assistance. I eagerly await your response and any guidance you can offer during this challenging time.

Sincerely,

Fangzhou

I have a couple of important moments to offer. First, it is important to understand that iCloud is NOT a backup service for Mac computers although it seems to have some of those features. What it does is mirrors the data that has been selected to be stored on iCloud. It is used for sharing to another device. Second, when the computer is no longer connected to iCloud you have a limited time to recover some data, so act quickly to retrieve it from iCloud. She will need to remember and use her iCloud password and her ID in order to access what is still there. Next time she needs to fully back up her data to an external disk or to a cloud backup service using Time Machine or another app such as Carbon Copy Cloner.

We’re not people that work for Apple. We’re other users. And most of us have lost data.

Here, the data that is not in iCloud and not stored elsewhere is gone.

If iCloud Desktop and Documents was enabled, check there.

Check for local Time Machine backups, too.

No backups? No iCloud Drive? Harsh lessons all around, unfortunately.

I’d wonder whether whoever was supervising this research project neglected to provide IT guidance, or that guidance was ignored, too.

Other cases of data loss have collapsed entire businesses.
