From previous posts it's not a sure thing but my OS 10.11 (since
upgraded to 10.13) Macbook Pro has been crashing randomly.
Etrepro mentions Sophos (I have the free version on this
laptop) but I'm unsure whether to uninstall it.

It would be a good place to start...
Third party AntiVirus is not recommended— it typically does nothing but add issues to the macOS and competes directly with Apple’s own built in security:
