Restore User after fresh wipe and OS install

G’day.

I want to do a wipe and fresh OS install on my old MacBook Pro SSHD. I’m wondering the best, most reliable way to back up the user folder, then restore it after the process. Is it as simple and copying to an external then copying it back in the same place? I have a tendency to overthink so asking here, lol

Cheers.
