AirTag Help

I just set up an AirTag. I had my son take the AirTag with him to a friends house. Shouldn't I have been notified that the AirTag was now miles away from where I was at my home? The entire time he was gone it showed that it was still in my house with me??? When I moved with my phone around my house, it was moving with me...BUT IT WAS MILES AWAY.

I removed it from devices and set it up again; same thing happened. I also reset my iPhone 13 and made sure it was fully updated.

Can anyone think of why I'm not being alerted when my son leaves with the AirTag and is miles away?

Sounds like it's not being taken with him. Or you are looking at the wrong device or option in the Find My app.

Yes, it should issue a notification when the AirTag is no longer near the paired iPhone.

Do you have more than one AirTag? If so, are you sure you are looking at the correct one in the Find My?

Are you looking under the "Items" section in the Find My App?

Sounds like you are looking at your phone's location, rather than the AirTag itself.

Also, note, that when the AirTag is separated from the paired device it will start making a sound and alert other devices of its presence through notifications on nearby Apple devices. Are you sure you want to subject your son's friends and their family to that?

AirTags are not meant to track people.

Why are you trying to track the AirTag and not your son's device (phone, tablet, etc..) directly?
