After my ios 16.5 update a strange number has appeared as a trusted device. The phone won't let me remove it. I changed my apple ID password but if this other number is still a trusted device and can receive verification codes does that mean that changing my ID password was pointless?
My own iphone number doesn't appear as a trusted device. How do I restore that?

You can add numbers on your Apple ID site as well as remove them. And you should also see your trusted devices. You must be logged in to your Apple ID to see the list, and if you changed your password you may have to log out of your phone and log back in.

Log in to https://appleid.apple.com, click on Security and update your trusted numbers and devices.
