My iPhone 14 overheating when connected to apple carplay

I think I found the pattern. If you start CarPlay on a too low battery phone, you are doomed.

If your battery is on a good charge to atart with (did not find the threshold yet). All is good.

Does the phone shut down when it says it needs to cool down, or does it just say charging is paused? Charging is paused is a normal message that every newer iPhone will display when fast charged. If it is shutting down and is in a car, is it in direct sun, which might be heating it?

I guess it's a matter of semantics as no, it didn't shut down but it get hot to the touch. If I plug it in, I get the overheating warning message. This ONLY happens when connected to Car Play so there must be some correlation. Again, I was not charging when it got hot.

As you didn’t read the thread you posted to, I will summarize it:

Your phone did not “overheat” - it paused charging at 80%. iPhones have always paused at 80% when fast charged to allow the battery to cool down, but they didn’t display a message; they just paused until the phone's temperature stabilized. 

With iOS 16.5 and later Apple has added a message SAYING why it has paused. But if you had never noticed that it paused at 80%, then this sounds like the update broke something. It's normal, just more information about why it paused.

I have it the same. 2 weeks old iPhone 14. It has 100% battery morning and even if the phone not charging, it was really hot when was connected to carplay. On way from work, I plugged in the cable and use waze for 1,5 hour. I started at 75% battery and finnished at 81% of battery with overheated phone and message about stoping the charge appeared. Iphone 11 didn’t have this problem at all. I tryed turn of the 5G and use LTE and still the same. Hope for some update, that will fix this issue.

But the iphone is really hot. I used iphone 11 with carplay all the time and it was slightly warm. But 14 is really hot and it is not because of charging. Even at the morning when has 100% after charging thru the night is the phone after 15 minutes plugged to car hot and it is not charging because it was already full. There is some issue.

The IOS update to 17.03 did not help one bit. I never has a problem with my 14 max or my 13 max with wireless carplay until the latest and supposed greatest update. Within 5 minutes you can tell its getting hot and I don't want to go the full 25 minute drive and really fry my battery/phone. I am traveling the same route with the same towers everyday. If it is not resolved soon my next upgrade will be a Samsung Ultra 23

I thought that mine was overheating during charging but it's ONLY while connected to CarPlay. I have a '23 Bolt and I connect wirelessly.

Mine overheats regardless of charge level.

Overheated this morning at 70 degrees, 80% charge. Not plugged in, sitting in my shirt pocket.

Same with my iPhone 12. This only started recently after latest iOS upgrade!

After 17.0.3 update is the iphone 14 overheating more than before on car play. Only on car play. Even the restart thru side buttons won’t help.

Trade for an iphone 15. That's what I did, no further problems.

When you fast charge an iPhone it gets warm, as predicted by the 2nd law of thermodynamics. So it is DESIGNED to pause around 80% to cool down, before completing the charge. This is normal and expected. It has not overheated. When an iPhone overheats it shuts down completely to cool off, and displays a message saying that. If it doesn’t shut down it has not overheated.
