My iPhone with IOS16.5.1 does not show plant ID option in info. It has never shown it even since iOS 15. My iPad shows it. Very frustrating.

Please also check if your iPhone is in this list
Your post shows an iPhone 8 Plus, that would be too old for this feature.

Hi léonie, thanks for your reply. There is no star on the info button and I only have about 20 photos on the phone at the moment. I haven't moved house and I have excellent internet here. Just talking to Apple support now, I will let you know the outcome.
FIXED IT!
It's not a function of the Camera or Photos settings, it's driven from the settings for Siri. I had switched off "Show in Look Up" and "Show in Spotlight" from within the main "Siri and Search" group as I don't want Siri tracking my every waking moment. Apple support had me switch them both back on and test with a new photo; happily the "Lookup xyzzy" option reappeared. At this point I don't know if I need both of these settings switched on. Now I know where to play, I will try deactivating one at a time to find the minimum access needed to activate the function. You may be happy to switch everything back on, which is your choice. Good luck!
SOLVED
My solution to this problem was to open Settings > Siri &Search and turn on Show in lookup in the CONTENT FROM APPLE section. I had turned this off in a long list of suggestions to improve battery life.
Does the Info button have a star
for any of your photos? If not, the scanning of the photos has not yet finished or you are not having an internet connection. Give photos plenty of time to scan your library with the iPhone connected to a power supply and the internet.
Or have you moved to a region, where visual lookup is not yet supported? iOS and iPadOS - Feature Availability - Apple
yes!!!! Worked. I just asked Siri to Show in Look Up.
And after a couple of times trying the identifier It worked
I just noticed that today sitting out and one of my favorite spots outside. I noticed the same thing it was not available and a great deal many close-ups. Or long shots. I’m running 17.4.1. That is very frustrating as well however, I’ve been taking most of my photos in raw when I can do more with them on the Mac. So I shut the raw off and it seem to work both in portrait view or white screen, I hope this helps.

It was in my settings in the photo settings that was shut off.
That’s why it would not ID anything
Had this problem too in iOS 18. Found the setting in search > show related content. Flipping on brought back my look ups in photos
From testing it. Looks like you really only need to to have 'Show in Look Up' on for Siri.
I just discovered I can use Visual Look Pp on my iMac . It's available with Monterey and later. Doesn't work quite the same as on the iPhone or iPad. I've never seen the star mon info before on my iMac, but now I do even though I've had Monterey for quite awhile. The trick is you have to click the icon on the actual photo. At least I do not have to get a new iPhone! Here is the article: Learn more about a photo using Visual Look Up in Photos on Mac - Apple Support
Not sure why mine isn’t working again (had this problem in the past and fixed it with the settings change). Note running 18.2 on a 15 Pro Max with Apple intelligence on.
As a workaround will start using the export/share button on an photo and picking “search on Google” which for me opens the Google app with lens search automatically. It’s a couple extra steps but seems to work similarly.
Just confirmed my phone should have this function:
Models that support Live Text, Visual Look Up, and lifting a subject from the background
Same here, not even seeing the option to identify plants, whether its a general view or close-up. Maybe my phone is too old now? It's an iPhone XR with the latest iOS, 16.5.1.
Anyone else having this issue?
I even tried shutting down and restarting the phone, :-) so now I am out of ideas!
