Using normal magnets as a holder for your iPhone 12 can potentially cause damage to the device, particularly to the MagSafe components on the back. The MagSafe feature relies on a series of magnets built into the iPhone to allow for wireless charging and magnetic attachment of accessories.

While the magnets in typical everyday objects may not be as strong as the MagSafe magnets, they can still interfere with the functionality and potentially disrupt the alignment of the MagSafe components. This interference can lead to issues such as a weak or inconsistent magnetic connection, disrupted wireless charging, or even damage to the magnets themselves.

To ensure the proper functioning of your iPhone 12 and to avoid any potential damage, it is recommended to use accessories specifically designed and approved for use with the MagSafe feature. These accessories are designed to work seamlessly with the iPhone 12 and will not pose a risk to the device.

If you need a magnetic holder for your iPhone 12, consider investing in a MagSafe-compatible holder or stand that is specifically designed for your device. This way, you can enjoy the benefits of magnetic attachment and wireless charging without risking any damage to your iPhone 12.

I use a magnetic stand for my iPhone 14 Pro Max, with a MagSafe case on my phone. The stand is purpose built to align with the MagSafe circle on the back of the case. As long as you are using something which is purpose built as a means of attaching to the MagSafe magnets in the phone, it is most unlikely you will cause any damage to the phone or charging system. Apple itself sells magnetic attachments for MagSafe, such as a MagSafe Wallet. It uses, as you say, normal magnets and it won't cause any damage. But it is purpose built to align precisely with the MagSafe charging circle in the phone.
