AirTag is useless

My son's brand new vehicle was broken into 5 days ago in Coral Springs, Florida and my purse with everything in it was stolen. I had an Airtag on my keychain. I have been tracking it and the location of the AirTag still shows the same location as the day my purse was stolen. Basically, I realize that AirTags are USELESS when stolen. If you client "Play a sound", it simply alerts the thief that there is an AirTag somewhere in your bag and they can just throw it away. I have been to the exact location to find my keychain/airtag but I keep getting the same message that the it is not traceable. I was walking along the side of a busy road; even if the AirTag made a sound, the ping is not even loud enough to be heard when there is traffic going by. I have 4 AirTags with 2 of them only being used in my luggages when travelling. Unless Apple works on better features for their AirTags, they are only good to locate your your items when they are simply misplaced in your home.

Sorry, but if your goal was to use your AirTags as an anti-theft tracking device, then as Rudegar has already mentioned, that is not what they are designed to do. You would need something that is based on GPS, not Bluetooth, to have any chance of locating a stolen item.

These items are, as you are now very familiar with, are limited to basically only for locating a missing item with your iPhone that the tag is associated with ... or by their signal being picked up by other iPhones with "Find My Network" enabled on them nearby. They are not recommended for tracking thieves, other people, family members, or pets.
