My Photo Stream is only a way to get photos from your iPhone or iPad to your Mac. If you have My Photo Stream enabled on all devices the photos should automatically be imported into your Mac's Library.
If the photos are in the stream they'll be on your iPhone and you can recover them from the iPhone at any time
Since My Photo Stream will be discontinued by Apple on July 26th of this year you should learn how to download your phoitos from your iPhone/iPad to your Mac using AirDrop or by the iPhone's charging cable directly to the Photos library either with the Photos or Image Capture app.
